Third-Wave Feminism and Pornography

Hello everyone :) This week I'm super busy, just like Daphne, because of my uni exams..
As you may know I study journalism in the university of Athens and this month is the hardest one. Also tomorrow I have oral exams in french and I'm really nervous because I struggle a lot with the pronunciation.. Meanwhile I'm working on a project that I have to deliver until Monday. The subject of the essay is "Objectification in Pornography" and I've learned things about porn industry that I wish I never did. But overall this research in pornography is not always negative. So I want to share some thing with you that I've learned during my research!
Porn industry helped women to explore their sexuality as encourage them to learn about their bodies and try to please themselves without any fear. I know that in the western culture the feminist movement tried to solve those problems but many communities nowadays are really conservative and create insecurities in women about their body image and their sexuality.Home-made or amateur porn videos create a fuller image on sex as they portray different types of bodies and a great variety of sexual actions in general. Porn also is in a way a freedom of expression and supports the idea that every person has the right to manage his body as he wish.My essay was essentially based on the third wave of feminism. In this term is described the new feminist theories about equality, sex and pornography. The most important part of this theory(for my essay) is that women should be treated equally, so they have the right to shoot porn films without the consideration that they are "used".I'm not saying that pornography doesn't have any flaws.Sometimes porn gives the wrong image about sex or about human relationships and also can be really addictive. But the main point is pornography can't be blamed for everything bad in society just because reflects society. So the last thing I want so say is try not to be judgmental, be open-minded, support equality and freedom of expression.Remember that if we didn't have freedom I wouldn't be able to do this post and could never disagree with an opinion that doesn't exist.Don't demonise human nature, accept it and let it free!

  1. This sounds like a really interesting topic. It seems easy to say that pornography is bad, but I think the issues that you've brought up here are absolutely valid. Very interesting!

  2. I have to agree.
I believe especially as a woman, that we are brought up to think that Pornography is a bad thing. That it is taboo to see or watch it let alone star or act in one.

Pornography can be quite a beautiful thing. I feel that it just depends on the way that it is presented. There are women such as the Suicide Girls ( ) ... it is one type of Pornography, but most times it is quite tasteful. They feature girls of all different body shape, hair colour, as well as style.

I would be interested in reading your paper on this topic if you are willing to share :)

  3. I love your viewpoint on this! There mostly always a positive light to controversial topics, and I think you've found it! I'm sure you'll do awesome on your essay.

I love LOVE love meeting people who are NOT ignorant and narrow minded, as I am a very open minded person. Thanks! :)

  4. First, good luck on your exams! Also, I'm so glad that you acknowledge the positive side to porn. As a sex educator, I spend a lot of time trying to show these points to people. I think pornography can be a great aid, but isn't an instructional manual for sex. Also, it is one of the few industries in which a woman will make more money than a man (when dealing with major studios), which I wish more companies would follow. Plus there is so much variety out there!

  5. WOW, that's very interestig :) I wrote my MA thesis on feminism and female friendship inn American literature and I loved it so much! My husband says that since then I am a nightmare saying that everything is 'not fair' and that women always suffered and had to fight for everything!!!!
Anyway, good luck with Your exams :)

  6. I think that you use the word pornography very freely, without considering that much of what you talk about could be called erotica. pornography is crafted for the heterosexual male consumer and a lot of it is damaging to women because it is violent and degrading and seeks to objectify womee. Erotica does not.

    1. your opinion actually is based on the anti-pornography feminism. The sex wars between the feminist began at the early 80's.
Sex-positive feminism centers on the idea that sexual freedom is an essential component of women's freedom. As such, sex-positive feminists oppose legal or social efforts to control sexual activities between consenting adults, whether these efforts are initiated by the government, other feminists, opponents of feminism, or any other institution. They embrace sexual minority groups, endorsing the value of coalition-building with members of groups targeted by sex-negativity. Sex-positive feminism is connected with the sex-positive movement.

you can have a look here:

I'm definatelly NOT saying that your opinion is wrong, I'm just saying that there are other opinions too that are also important for everyone to learn.

  7. ...hey girl! i'd love to read your final paper on the subject. if you don't mind, or care to share, send it over :)
